
Aszure Barton was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, and received her formal dance training at the National Ballet School in Toronto, where, as a student, she helped originate the ongoing Stephen Godfrey Choreographic Showcase. She also studied at The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Alberta Ballet School, Sandra Gray School of Dance, The Edmonton Ballet School, and the John Cranko Schule in Stuttgart, Germany. She has choreographed new works for many prestigious individuals and companies worldwide including Mikhail Baryshnikov, Fang-Yi Sheu, The National Ballet of Canada, American Ballet Theatre, Sydney Dance Company, The Juilliard School, ABT II, The Martha Graham Dance Company, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, among others. Her choreography has been performed at many inernationally renowned venues including Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, Spoleto Dance Festival, The Joyce Theater, John F. Kennedy Center, Madrid's Teatro Espanol, Studio 54, among many others. Ms. Barton choreographed the Broadway production of The Threepenny Opera starring Alan Cumming, Jim Dale, Nellie Mackay, Ana Gasteyer, and Cyndi Lauper (in a new translation by Wallace Shawn, directed by Scott Elliott). She has had the honor of performing along side many distinguished artists including Mikhail Baryshnikov, and has performed with The National Ballet of Canada, Les Ballets jazz de Montreal, Wendy Osserman Dance Company, Hell's Kitchen Dance, Ruth Davidson Hahn & Company, and her own, Aszure Barton & Artists. Ms. Barton is the recipient of numerous grants and awards from across North America and overseas, and has choreographed several international film projects. Ms. Barton is currently an artist in residence at The Banff Centre in Canada (2009) and The Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City ('05|'06|'08|'09). She was the Resident Choreographer for BJM Danse Montreal from 2005-2008, and was recently proclaimed the official Ambassador of Contemporary Choreography in Edmonton, Alberta.
